Overnight Parking At Walmart. Can You Do That?

As you may now we full time in our RV and when we are travelling, as in just travelling through, and are done for the day we often head for the nearest Flying J or Walmart. Why Walmart? We do that for a bunch of reasons: First, they are convenient, they are everywhere, usually right on the highway. Add to that the 24 hour security, we don’t get our coach dirty tracking down some muddy side road to some $20 or $30 park for a few hours sleep and let’s not forget, they don’t charge for parking.

When we are going to sit for a few days, that’s where the park comes in, not when we are travelling.

At most Walmart stores, that’s just fine. At some others that’s a no-no. We have an Camp and RV app on our smart phone that gives us lists of can and can’t park locations and websites like OvernightRVParking.com offer lists as well but we have never found these lists all that accurate. We have found that the very best way to find out is to go into the store, go to the Greeter or Customer  Service and politely ask. And yes, while we’re in the store, we usually buy a few things, in fact often it would be cheaper to go somewhere and pay the rent.

No matter  what the signs in the lot say, to date we have never heard the words Sorry or No.

Will we someday? Of course, but we have probably asked six to twelve times a year for over the last twenty years and so far the answer has always been positive.

As an example tonight’s greeter’s response was “Don’t you worry about a thing sweetie, just come on in”.

From the Walmart Website here’s their official response:

Can I park my RV at a Walmart store?

While we do not offer electrical service or accommodations typically necessary for RV customers, Walmart values RV travelers and considers them among our best customers. Consequently, we do permit RV parking on our store lots as we are able. Permission to park is extended by individual store managers, based on availability of parking space and local laws. Please contact management in each store to ensure accommodations before parking your RV.
So; Always ask politely, don’t put your jacks down into their pavement (you don’t need your jacks, their lots are usually very level), and leave in the morning with your garbage. And most of all, enjoy your trip.
